The Reef check geocoin was created to bring awareness to the Reef Check Foundation and their cause.
Founded in 1997, the Reef Check Foundation (www.reefcheck.org) is a nonprofit organization established to reverse the coral reef crisis through reef conservation on a global scale. Reef Check's thousands of volunteer citizen scientists in over 90 countries and territories participate in scientific research, education and conservation programs and provide ecologically sound and economically sustainable solutions in partnership with businesses, government agencies and academia.
Reef Check's California program was launched in 2006 to help conserve rocky reef life in the Golden state. In 2008, Reef Check has been a driving force behind The International Year of the Reef (IYOR) 2008, a year-long celebration intended to increase global awareness of coral reefs and associated ecosystems, and to persuade people worldwide to take simple actions that benefit coral reefs.
Geocaching has become a sport that many different types of people can enjoy. For Geocachers who love the nature, it is a great way to get out doors, but also an avenue to get other people interested in protecting our precious environment. This coin concept was created by Bryan Hufalar, a Geocacher who grew up in Maui, Hawaii amongst one of the most beautiful coral reefs in the world. He wanted to create this coin to help spread the news of this organization and also people's awareness of the declining reef life and what we can do about it.
